Manchester United Jersey History
Few clubs have a jersey lineage as storied as Manchester United's. From the Umbro snowflake away kit to the Treble shirt of 1999 and the Adidas heritage revival, here's a decade-by-decade walk through the kits that defined the club \u2014 and what to look for as a collector.
Era-by-era
1990–1992
Umbro — The Birth of the Modern United Shirt
A simple red home shirt with a white chunky collar and the classic Sharp Electronics sponsor. The blue-and-yellow snowflake away kit became one of the most recognisable shirts of the era and is still hunted by collectors today.
1992–1994
Umbro — First Premier League Champions
Worn during United's first Premier League title win in 1993. A bolder, more textured red shirt with stripe detailing on the sleeves — the kit Cantona, Robson and Hughes lifted the trophy in.
1995–1996
Umbro — The Grey Away Kit Story
Famously ditched at half time at The Dell because players said they couldn't see each other. A defining piece of Premier League folklore and one of the most talked-about shirts in football history.
1998–1999
Umbro — The Treble Shirt
The shirt that lifted the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in a single season. Plain red, woven crest, with the AIG — sorry, Sharp Viewcam — sponsor on the chest. The most iconic Manchester United shirt of the modern era.
2000–2002
Umbro — The Vodafone Years
A glossier fabric, deeper red, and the new Vodafone sponsor. The 2000–02 shirt is closely associated with peak Beckham, Scholes and Keane — a favourite for collectors who came of age in the early 2000s.
2002–2006
Nike Takes Over
Nike's first United shirts moved away from Umbro's chunky collars to cleaner crew necks and lighter fabrics. The Ronaldo, Rooney and Van Nistelrooy era — huge nostalgia value among collectors today.
2014–Present
Adidas — A Return to Heritage
Adidas brought back the three stripes and a more retro-inspired silhouette. Modern shirts blend heritage cues from the 90s with current performance fabrics and slimmer fits.
What collectors look for

- Crest construction: woven crests on 90s kits, embroidered crests on 2000s kits, heat-pressed on modern player versions.
- Fabric weight: early 90s shirts are heavier polyester; modern shirts are noticeably lighter and more breathable.
- Tagging & size labels: Umbro and early Nike size tags follow specific layouts \u2014 a quick way to verify the era of a shirt.
Care tips for older shirts
